The 16 passenger Monserrat is owned and operated by and Ecuadorian family with strong Galapagos roots.  We consider it as among the highest end “tourist superior” ships out there, for its relative spaciousness (designed for 20 guests, but carrying only 16) and comfortable cabins.  It was constructed in 2005 and extensively refurbished in 2023.

Because it has room for 20 guests and only accepts 16, there is added flexibility for families and solo travellers.   Two of the rooms are a triple (twin beds with a bunk) - perfect for a small family, or for an odd-numbered group of friends travelling together.  Few ships offer this kind of versatility.

All cabins have a private bathroom and air conditioning. The 6 upper deck cabins all have large windows while our 4 lower deck cabins have portholes with great interior natural light. Rooms include ensuite bathrooms with hairdryers and necessary toiletries.

Public spaces include a smart dining area with individual tables seating four.

A simple but well appointed "drinks station":

A social area / lounge for evening presentations and informal gatherings:

Several outdoor decks for ocean observation / sunbathing / al fresco dining:

DECK PLANS

A lower deck consisting of four cabins (two as triples - having twin beds and a bunk, and two with double beds).

The upper deck with six cabins:

The main deck, with the dining area, lounge and drinks station:

The sun deck, with lounge chairs, and a covered area for al fresco dining.

ZODIACS:  One underappreciated advantage found on the Monserrat is its large zodiacs.  They're extra large - built to carry 12 passengers (10 guests, a guide and a zodiac driver), we'll have a maximum 10 people on board - meaning a greater ease of moving about on the zodiac, swinging any camera gear around as you try to get that nice shot, and overall greater comfort.  They are also more stable at beach landings.

Our family holiday on the Samba rates as one of the very best we have ever had!  We loved that every day was filled from before dawn to bedtime with a combination of activities that everyone enjoyed.  Our guide Santiago Moran was exceptional and worked out very quickly what we all enjoyed.  The crew were brilliant and made our stay on board really comfortable.  I had thought the Galapagos would be a once in a lifetime experience but I am now inspired to go  back and explore the NW having loved the SE itinerary.
