A new Galapagos Atlas
A new Galapagos Atlas: fuel for the curious traveller
There’s good news for those who like to understand a little more about the places they visit. The Charles Darwin Foundation has published a revised, English-language edition of its Galapagos Atlas—309 pages of maps, photographs and scientific knowledge about these remarkable islands. At CNH Tours, we’re delighted to see this resource made freely available. Whether you’re preparing for your first visit or looking back on a memorable expedition, there is plenty here to keep your curiosity occupied.
Why are some animals found on particular islands, while others occur throughout the archipelago? How do ocean currents help shape the wildlife encounters we enjoy? The atlas provides useful context, combining chapters on geology, climate and human history with illustrated species profiles and distribution maps. Familiar favourites—giant tortoises, marine iguanas and Darwin’s finches—share its pages with less celebrated inhabitants. A little browsing before departure could add another dimension to a shoreline walk, a snorkelling outing or a conversation with your naturalist guide.
One particularly appealing feature is the atlas’s willingness to identify what scientists still don’t know. Even in Galapagos, there is much left to discover—a welcome reminder that these islands remain a place of ongoing exploration. We congratulate the Foundation and its contributors on a publication that brings that spirit to a wider audience. Download your free copy here, and spend some time getting acquainted with the islands before you arrive. Fair warning: you may finish with more questions for your guide!
